took be gi yukgaejang

I was expecting a slapdash food from a place like Took Be Gi.


The inside of the restaurant is quite small. Its entrance is tucked away around the corner of Hay St, at Pier St.

For a reasonably priced korean food, they dished out a reasonable variety of banchan. I loved them all, the sweet lotus root with a sprinkling of sesame seeds, the cool beansprouts, the salty crackly nori, and the spicy kimchi.

Yukgaejang - $11
Their yukgaejang was tasty and satisfying. No beef chunks in sight, just beef strips. Plenty of bean sprouts, spring onions and bracken. 

I am somewhat disappointed of the lack of potato noodle, though. It clearly said in the menu that there should be potato noodle in this dish.

Spicy pork & squid sizzling BBQ - $11
Hubby got himself the spicy pork and squid on a hotplate, which was on special. There was a bit of trepidation that it was going to be too spicy, looking at the amout of red pepper powder coating the squid. But it wasn't, it was only mildly spicy and actually quite sweet. And the squid was cooked perfectly, tender and not chewy

It was almost a pleasant experience if it wasn't because of the rice, they came to the table cold. There should be no excuse there.

Another scratch-our-heads moment was the complimentary water. It smelled of chlorine for some reason, like it's taken from the nearest public pool. I'm not sure if it was because they sanitised the glass & pitcher with chlorine, or if it's actually the water. It was somewhat off-putting.
