Late Night Snack at Gwangjang Market

Our last, and most memorable, outing in Korea was at Gwangjang Market 광장시장. I wanted to go there to experience an authentic korean night market. To eat some crispy bindaetteok 빈대떡 and what other delicacies the market offers.

Bindaetteok 빈대떡 - ₩5,000
We set off by foot from our hotel late at night with a map in hand, and we still got lost. Fortunately two korean office workers helped us to get there with a bit of pointing and body language.

We started eating as soon as we set foot on the premises. The vendors were all so nice. An ahjumma, who was originally from Harbin 哈尔滨, found out that we can speak a little mandarin and gave us some extra jangtteok 장떡 with our order of gajami jjeon 가자미전. Isn't that awesome? Koreans would call this "service".

Gajami jjeon 가자미전 - ₩12,000
Mayak gimbap 마약 김밥 - ₩2,000

The surprising dish for us was the mayak gimbap 마약 김밥, it really was addictive. I think what made it was the mustard dipping sauce. The heat from the mustard goes really well with the simple flavours of the gimbap.

This visit really made us sad to be leaving Korea so soon.

stock market, for the soul

We're at Granville Island. It's been a torture of a day.

But we press on. Torturing ourselves.

the forks, where the rivers meet

Fresh snow, fluffy, like a bowl of freshly shaved slushie. Makeshift hockey nets are at the ready on the solid Red River surface. Not far away, so is the Assiniboine River.

groceries in montmartre

I find it curious when I'm in a country where I don't understand the language of, suddenly everything seems such a novelty. A trip to the grocery, which normally takes 10 minutes, would take triple the time.

fresh subi fruits & veg

What is a city without its own local farmers' market? A destination for people to source out the cheapest, freshest, in-season ingredients. These days where supermarkets are at every corner street, you would think we would not have any need for a farmers' market. And I don't dispute that the convenience factor is key. But, as I have found, mostly all 'fresh' produce in the supermarket have been stored in the refrigerated containers at the back of the store, away from our prying eyes. It may be days before they reach the display in the store. When I finally get my hands on it, I have merely 2-3 days to consume it.

A farmers' market is filled with ingredients direct from the producer. That, not only, reduces the price significantly. But you also get the best chance of having the freshest ingredients. It's also nice knowing more money is in the producers' pockets rather than giving it to a faceless corporate.
